GUM SAAN JOURNAL is the semi-academic, annual publication of the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California. We welcome manuscripts that explore the historical, cultural, and humanistic aspects of Chinese American experiences, particularly relating to Southern California. We also solicit articles exploring contemporary issues relevant to the Chinese American community. Manuscripts should be approximately 3000 words in length. If the manuscript is accepted for publication, authors should obtain permission to reproduce any copyrighted materials or photographs used in the article. Electronic files are preferred.

Submissions should be addressed to:

CHSSC's 2009 Edition of the Gum Saan Journal, Volume 31, Number 1
The first article is by Linda Ngov, discussing the forces in Los Angeles that led to the demolition of Old Chinatown in favor of Union Station. The second article is a pictorial article by Raymond Chong about his father who worked at Far East Cafe in Los Angeles' Little Tokyo. Susie Ling, one of the co-editors said, "This was an easy job for me; both writers did a great job although the articles are very different. But Icy Smith, the other co-editor, did more work with all these photos." The editors also plan to put more excerpts of the Journal online to encourage a wider audience.

As usual, our professional editor, Icy Smith, puts the finishing touches on the Journal that make us all proud. You really have to appreciate her attention to detail coupled with great artistry. ----------Susie Ling
