South Pasadena Chinese American Club
Mission Statement
To provide valuable services and resources through scholarships and grants to schools.
To promote the education of the Chinese language, culture, and art in the city.
To participate in and sponsor many South Pasadena community events.
History
The South Pasadena Chinesei American club was founded in 1989 by Karl Hwang, Malchon Kao and Paul Zee. It currently has about 150 members with a governing Board of 21 members, who meet once a month.
Activities/Achievements/Awards
Awarded over $10,000 each year to South Pasadena Schools, including After School Homework Program, Chess Club, Guided Reading Program, ben Franklin Project, Fun Fair, Math Field Day, Music Department multimedia equipment, Senior Scholarships.
Cultural Exchanges include Moon Festival, Chinese New Year meals for seniors, baskets for city and schools, ESL partnership to help Chinese immigrants, and Translation services for the city.
Community Outreach includes Summer Reading Program, Piano Restoration, Author Forums, July 4th Parade Booth, $10,000 donor to Huntington Library's new Chinese Garden, major donor to American Cancer Society's Relay for Life, serving dinner once a month to Pasadena's Union Station Foundation's Adopt-A-Meal progoram, Karaoke and Annual Ball Fundraising Dinners.
Future Plans
Forum on the Chinese American Journey in collaboration with the Chinese Historical Society of Southern California.
Forum on Tea Chinese Artist Showcase Event in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce.
Co-sponsoring events with Kiwanis, Rotary, and Vecinos de South Pasadena.
