Betty Tom Chu noted the
difficulties of obtaining mortgages or business loans by Chinese Americans and
other minorities. It motivated her to work with local business leaders in
establishing East West Bank in 1973. As a lawyer, Betty Tom Chu prepared the
Certificate of Application to the Federal Home Loan Bank. In 1981, Betty Tom
Chu founded Trust Savings Bank and became the first female founding chairperson
and chief executive officer of a savings bank in the United States. The bank
staff speaks English, Mandarin Chinese, Cantonese and Spanish. Trust Savings
Bank relocated to Arcadia with offices in Monterey Park and West Covina, all are
part of the Greater Los Angeles area in California. In 2004 Trust Savings merged with
East West Bank.
