Tsai Chin

  Tsai is the daughter of Zhou Xinfang, China's preeminent classical actor. Raised in Shanghai, she was the first Asian to be trained at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in England. She earned her Master's Degree in drama at Tufts University in the U.S. Tsai first came to prominence on the London stage starring in The World of Susie Wong, followed by performances in such classics as The Oresteia and The Scarlet Letter, as well as M Butterfly with Anthony Hopkins. Tsai has performed in all media, and even recorded a huge hit record, "The Ding Dong Song"! After the Cultural Revolution ended in China, Tsai was the first person invited from abroad to teach acting at the Central Academy of Drama in Beijing, where she directed Shakespeare's The Tempest and Twelth Night and Chekhov's The Seagull. Since her success in The Joy Luck Club, Tsai has acted continually on stage (The Woman Warrior, Golden Child), screen (Memoirs of a Geisha, Red Corner, Casino Royale) and TV (Grey's Anatomy, Evidence). Her autobiography, Daughter of Shanghai, has five printing in English and five in Chinese. A one-woman show based on her life is being written by David Henry Hwang.
