Become a teacher and guide The Chinese Historical Society of Southern California has been around for nearly 30 years and its operations are based out of two Victorian houses in Los Angeles' Chinatown. One of the cornerstones of our community outreach is leading walking tours of Chinatown Los Angeles. During the tours, which last from 60 to 90 minutes, we point out locations relevant to the history of Los Angeles and Southern California. The sites and background reveal the important role Chinese played in helping to build up the region. We offer a formal docent training program, complete with an informational packet. We also take prospective docents out for walks to show them what's what, and we invite them to follow some of our more experienced docents on their tours to get a fix on the delivery styles of other people. Being a docent is a lot of fun! You get to meet people from all walks of life, such as exchange students from around the world, gifted students from other parts of the country, young children just beginning their school careers and Elderhostel groups with inquisitive senior citizens. There is even something of a stipend involved to motivate people to come out and spend time with us and the tour groups. Anyone interested in this unique opportunity to gain valuable public-speaking, teaching and community-service experience is urged to call (323) 222-0856. We especially need docents who have time during the weekdays, when many of the local school children come by on the busloads craving information about Chinatown. |
